The University of the Philippines Manila (UP Manila) is the health sciences center of the UP System and the country’s leading institution for medical and health-related education, research, and public service. Established in 1908 and located in the historic Ermita district of Manila, it is home to the UP College of Medicine, the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), the National Institutes of Health and several other colleges focused on health sciences. UP Manila plays a vital role in producing top healthcare professionals, advancing medical research, and providing quality, accessible healthcare to the Filipino people.
UP Manila is composed of the following constituent colleges and units:

UP College of Allied Medical Professions

Established in 1962 as the School of Allied Medical Professions, the University of the Philippines College of Allied Medical Professions (CAMP) is a pioneer for training in rehabilitation therapy in Asia. It is a leading institution in the Philippines for the rehabilitation sciences that educates and trains competent professionals in the various allied health fields. It offers programs such as Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech Pathology with a focus on holistic patient care and rehabilitation. CAMP emphasizes strong foundations in scientific knowledge, critical thinking, and ethical practice to prepare graduates in professional roles to meet diverse healthcare needs of Filipinos. CAMP is committed to research and community service and extending their expertise for public health initiatives.

UP Manila College of Arts and Sciences

The UP Manila College of Arts and Sciences (UPM CAS) provides a high-quality liberal arts education to its students, and students from the other colleges at UP Manila. The CAS faculty includes national and international leaders in their respective disciplines that include physical sciences, mathematics, computer science, social sciences, behavioral sciences, arts and the humanities. The College of Arts and Sciences is a diverse community composed of students, faculty members, and staff from all over the country and around the globe. It believes not only in the inclusion of diverse groups in the academic community, but in making the study of diversity an important part of academic inquiry. Students in the college learn to think critically and analytically about race, ethnicity, and the global world through the course offerings of the six CAS departments.. Complementing the course offerings are supplementary programs designed to recognize academic excellence in the students, enhance the undergraduate experience, and prepare students for graduate and professional schools in UP. Established as a University Extension Division in 1951, the College has evolved into a college offering 10 undergraduate courses and 3 masters degrees to more than 2,500 students.

UP College of Dentistry

The UP College of Dentistry (UPCD) was established as a Department of the UP College of Medicine Surgery in Manila on February 8, 1915. It is a key institution in the oral healthcare landscape in the Philippines. The college is recognized for their commitment to academic excellence and educating and training highly skilled and socially-aware dental professionals. There are three departments in the College: Basic Health Sciences, which takes charge of all fundamental courses; Clinical Dental Health Sciences, which is the hands-on patients phase; and Community Dentistry which handles all social and community dentistry courses. The college makes certain that their three-fold institutional objectives are accomplished: students must become scientifically knowledgeable, technically capable and socially sensitive. In addition to the undergraduate course, the College of Dentistry also offers a graduate course in Orthodontics, the first Master of Science in Dentistry degree in the Philippines.

UP College of Medicine

The UP College of Medicine (UPCM) is one of the leading medical school in the Philippines. Established in 1905 as the Philippine Medical School, UPCM predates the establishment of the University of the Philippines. UPCM has been designated as a Center of Excellence in Medical Education by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), along with excellence in research, and community service. The college aims to educate and train medical doctors with excellent clinical skills and a strong sense of social responsibility. Their curriculum and outreach programs are designed to produce physicians who are dedicated to serving the health needs of the underprivileged and marginalized communities in the Philippines. UPCM is the first medical college in the Philippines to offer a shortened medical curriculum from a two-degree, nine-year standard medical program into the seven-year medical curriculum through its Integrated Arts Medicine Program (INTARMED).

UP College of Nursing

The University of the Philippines College of Nursing (UPCN) is one of the leading nursing schools in the Philippines. UPCN has been designated as a Center of Excellence by the Commission on Higher Education. The college aims to be a change agent serving the health needs of the Filipino people, and provides leadership and excellence in nursing development in the global community. UPCN places strong emphasis on social accountability is evident in its community-oriented and value-based curriculum that trains students to deliver compassionate and holistic care in various community settings.

UP College of Pharmacy

The UP College of Pharmacy (UPCP) is a leading institution in the Philippines for pharmaceutical education and research. UPCP offers a robust curriculum in its Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program. It is known for its rigorous academic standards and a strong focus on community health and patient-centered care. The college also spearheads various research initiatives, contributing significantly to advancements in pharmaceutical sciences.

UP College of Public Health

The UP College of Public Health (CPH) is one of the nine degree-granting units of the University of the Philippines Manila. UPCPH champions social accountability by directing education, research, and service activities towards addressing priority health concerns in the Philippines. UPCPH aims to equip graduates with skills to tackle complex health issues. Their research focuses on critical areas such as epidemiology, environmental health, and health policy. Extension services of UPCPH actively engage communities to improve health outcomes and promote well-being, especially among underserved populations.

National Teacher Training Center for the Health Professions

The UP National Teacher Training Center for the Health Professions (NTTCHP) was established in January 30, 1975 to address the need for training of health professionals to engage in effective teaching, research, and extension service. NTTCHP offers a ladderized academic program in Health Professions Education. The center’s mission is to develop educational program designers, evaluators, researchers, and leaders. It offers graduate programs such as Master in Health Professions Education (MHPEd) and a Doctor of Health Professions Education (DrHPEd) that focus on social accountability by training educators who can produce health professionals dedicated to serving the nation’s health needs.

UP National Institutes of Health

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is housed within UP Manila. UP NIH is home to several research units of UP Manila and is one of the Philippines’ leading health research and development institution. UP NIH was established to strengthen the country’s capacity for health research. It serves as a platform for interdisciplinary research, collaboration, and capacity-building across various health disciplines. UP NIH focuses on addressing priority health issues in the Philippines through innovative research and by translating these into practical health solutions and policies. It plays a crucial role in fostering a culture of research excellence and promoting the application of evidence-based practice to improve the health and well-being of Filipinos, underscoring its commitment to national health development. With “Health for All” as its thrust, UP NIH develops outputs that serve as vital guideposts in shaping national programs and policies.

UP NIH Institute of Clinical Epidemiology – Social Innovation in Health Initiative (SIHI)

The Social Innovation in Health Initiative (SIHI) is a vibrant global network dedicated to accelerating universal health coverage through social innovation, community engagement, and social justice in low- and middle-income countries. Since its inception in 2014, the SIHI Network has continuously expanded, bringing together a diverse group of passionate individuals, organizations, and institutions who share a common goal.
SIHI envisions inclusive and equitable health, empowered by social innovations that unite communities, health systems actors, and other stakeholders, ensuring that no one is left behind. The mission is to accelerate universal health coverage and health equity through research, capacity strengthening, and advocacy for social innovation, community engagement, and social justice in low- and middle-income countries.

UP Community Health and Development Program

UP Community Health and Development Program (CHDP) is an inter-college initiative of UP Manila mandated by the University to enter partnerships with municipalities in the Philippine to set up and maintain community-based health programs. It provides a venue for learning, immersion, and service activities of UP Manila faculty, staff and students. The CHDP Conceptual Framework considers the community as a partner in health and development. By working collaboratively with local government units, health workers, and community members, UP CHDP aims to empower communities to manage their own health and development, leading to healthier and more resilient populations. The objectives of the UP CHDP are to assist communities in attaining enhanced capacities in their own health care and development through the Primary Health Care Approach while providing learning opportunities for the faculty and students of UP in the principles and practice of community health and development which they can also use in their extension and volunteer work.
